Tailored for new immigrants eager to swiftly integrate into mainstream American classrooms, this course is instructed by Peter Muto, a seasoned ESL professional with over 10 years of teaching experience in ESL. The curriculum is designed to assist students in establishing a robust English foundation and rapidly enhancing their practical language skills through the following components:

Mr. Muto employs a humorous and engaging teaching style to cultivate a safe and relaxed communication environment, encouraging ESL students lacking confidence to speak publicly.

Rigorous writing exercises will lay the groundwork for students' academic writing in high school history and English courses.

Enriching reading materials from various subjects (science, history, mathematics, literature) will broaden students' academic vocabulary and reading abilities, removing language barriers for ESL students and enhancing performance in other subjects.

Academic Writing

Taught by Dr. Francesca, a seasoned historian and linguist, this course introduces students to her unique analytical writing system. Dr. Francesca guides students to think and write like scholars, enhancing persuasive writing, close reading, effective argumentation, and efficient sentence and essay composition.

学术写作：由资深的历史学家、语言学家Dr. Francesca授课，Dr. Francesca自创分析写作体系，带领学生学习想学者一样思考和写作：增加文本说服力、精读解释文本、进行有效论证、避免逻辑错误、高效撰写句子和篇章。

 

Book Analysis and Writing

In-depth and extensive reading is one of the most valuable activities for middle schoolers. Reading expands students' knowledge and broadens their depth of thought, while deep reading establishes a solid academic foundation for high school studies and prepares students for more advanced English like AP English and SAT/ACT English tests. This course guides students in summarizing, analyzing, and critiquing books. Following a pace of reading one book every five weeks, students will cover different genres (argumentative, descriptive, explanatory, narrative) and engage in corresponding writing exercises. The first book is "Frankenstein," with a focus on argumentative writing.

整书阅读与研究: 

有深度地阅读、大量阅读是初中阶段最值得做的事情之一，广泛阅读不仅能够扩展知识面、拓展思想深度，深度阅读更是能够为学生高中学习打下扎实的学术基础、为高中更高级的英文课程如AP课程和SAT/ACT的英文测试提前打下基础。

本课程将带领学生总结、分析、批判整本书籍，以每五周读一本书的节奏，四个月下来会完成分析阅读不同的重点体裁作品 （议论、描述、说明、记叙），同时会辅以对应的写作练习。

第一本书：Frankenstein（科学怪人），写作练习重点：议论文写作

 

AP/SAT English Preparation Reading and Writing

Tailored for high school students gearing up for AP and SAT English. This course, led by a UCI English graduate teacher, involves analyzing selected chapters from books where AP and SAT test materials come from. In the first book, Ms. Sarah will lead students to read a literary classic, Jane Austen's "Pride and Prejudice".
